part 1 to something i haven’t figured out yet: an abnormal interest

I find it interesting that so much attention is being given to the subject of spirituality these days. Is that a good or a bad thing? If I were with a group of people, and all of the sudden everyone began to discuss their liver, not only would bad child memories of mom sliding the brown slab of ‘meat’ across the table bring my spirits down, but I would begin to think that there was a problem with everyone’s liver. That is just the kind of thing that doesn’t make up everyday conversation, unless there is something going on that is a bit out of the ordinary.

As you look at the culture that we live in here in the United States, doesn’t it seem like the sudden interest in spirituality play into the same way of thinking about it. Spirituality isn’t the worse thing that we could be talking about. But maybe the spike of interest in it points to the idea that something is wrong with our culture.

If you liver is healthy and functioning properly, you probably won’t bring it up. If your soul is healthy, you probably won’t make it a point to direct attention at it all the time. Your body tends to function normally day in and day out without you paying much attention to it. The fact that everyone is getting spiritual these days should point us to the realization that something abnormal is going on.

Being interested in spirituality alone is not what makes us sick as a culture. The fact that our culture is sick is what has sparked the interest in spirituality. We have gotten to be too secular.

There is a cure for the sickness.

The condition of America’s soul right now is metaphorically reminiscent of the ooze that the Holy Spirit hovered over in Genesis 1.2. That same Holy Spirit does hover over the chaos that has become our soul.

The same Holy Spirit that came down upon Jesus at the baptism in Matthew 3.16 still comes down on His followers today.

The same Holy Spirit that blew in to fill the group that was gathered on Pentecost in Acts 2.1-4 still fills men and women today in Michigan, Texas, New Mexico… and thw whole United States.

All day. Every day.
